Albany, Western Australia

After three days in (pretty cool) Melbourne, we headed over to Perth
to meet up with former housemate Lucas and his little brother who
volunteered his car for our trip down south to Albany. So after
stuffing ourselves with a huge load of fish'n'chips, we started our
little road trip throuh the more, uhm, rural Australia. Just to find
ourselved welcomed warmly by Lucas' family with a beautiful view over
the bay in Albany at night. More after some breakfast, and hopefully
some pictures, too.

Elsewhere known as Prenzlauer Berg, Williamsburgh, Brisbane's Westend: Melbourne's St Kilda. Breakfast till 5pm, at least, the creative crowd or the people who wanna look like they're part of it, and the leftover urban tribes who haven't yet moved away completely. Nice as a visitor - although the by-now-way-too-mainstream attitude here probably freaks out the original residents... for visitors, though, it sure is really nice.

Travel music: radio phnom phen

Put on "Radio Phnom Penh," released this year on the Seattle label Sublime Frequencies, and you might be very surprised. The album consists of material that Alan Bishop taped off the radio on a trip to Cambodia last year, chopped up and rearranged into pieces he has given titles like "Rebel Guitars in Strange Dialect" and "The Shiny Radio in a Blind Man's Wallet." Some of the songs Mr. Bishop excerpts are Cambodian pop from the 70's; others are the remixes favored by Phnom Penh's FM radio stations, with drum machines and synthesizers grafted onto older recordings. One is a cover of "El Condor Pasa," by Simon and Garfunkel, itself an adaptation of a Peruvian folk melody. They're interrupted by disturbingly American-sounding ads and station breaks.

Our friends at International House gave us a long and great farewell ceremony. Gosh, that was really draining, seeing all you people standing there, waving... Thanks guys, I couldn't imagine a better crowd and farewell. The signs are good for a long and intense trip. And I'll see a whole bunch of you along the way.

As a fortune cookie told me awhile ago: Soon you will be travelling around the world. Can't wait!
